SelectHomeWarranty Reviews Summary

The overall reputation of Select Home Warranty is predominantly negative, with numerous customers expressing dissatisfaction regarding service delays, claim denials, and poor customer support. Many reviews highlight a troubling pattern of unfulfilled promises, lack of transparency in policy coverage, and difficulty in obtaining reimbursements. Horrible
August 19, 2023

"We had an AC problem, Their preferred contractor came to evaluate, two days after filing claim, on Tuesday. With it being 100 degrees outside, I told the contractor to come back the next day and fix my issue, so we would have AC on the 100 degree weekend(with elderly family coming for a visit.) I paid the contractor in full for his work, to have SHW deny my claim because it didn't go through the 24-48 hour of approval process. After several lengthy calls and no return calls, I finally was able to get a manager return my call. Still denied. They have ZERO sympathy for their customers, as they go by rule in the contract about prior approval. I asked to speak to his boss to no avail, as they said they don't have phone availability to the end user. I am going to cancel my plan, and report them to the BBB as well as give them negative reviews on every website I can. Very unprofessional and unjust. This has been the worst experience anybody should have to deal with. I wouldn't even give them one star, as we put the full amount."

Bought a 5½ -year policy from Select Home Warranty ("SHW") in Nov 2022 for $2500. On 7/21/23 my clothes dryer stopped working; Filed a claim online on 7/23; rec'd email & text messages on 7/24 that a tech would come 7/26 between 8am & noon. On 7/26: No show, no call. Rec'd email/text msgs on 7/27 that the tech would come 7/27 between 8am & noon. Again no show, no call. On 7/28 a tech arrived, diagnosed the problem & said he'd draft a report & send it to SHW, who would order parts & have them sent to me, then I should call the tech to come back to do the repair.

On 8/4 we called SHW to check on the claim; were told the parts had not been ordered yet. We req'd they be ordered immediately & shipped overnight; rep said he'd see what he could do. On 8/15 we called SHW, were told they rec'd the report over 2 weeks ago: the dryer could not be fixed & they were waiting on a determination from their Resolution Dept. I req'd that SHW email me a copy of the report; they told me I needed to get it from the tech. Left several messages for the tech but have not rec'd any reply.

On 8/16 (today) I rec'd an email saying they had approved a $185 reimbursement (my dryer is 5 yrs old & cost nearly $700), but I must repair or replace the unit myself, send SHW the "paid invoice", and then wait to receive a "Reimbursement Form" to sign/return before they'd send a check.

So I've been without a clothes dryer for nearly a month & it's still broken. I emailed SHW to cancel my policy & expect a full refund. There's no reason my dryer can't be repaired, the tech missed app'ts & I have not rec'd the report. The delay is unacceptable & their rep gave us erroneous info re: parts. No one followed up on the claim, their offer is insultingly low & requires unnecessary paperwork.

SHW's website says "We'll repair your covered item. You'll pay a minimal service fee. It's that simple." This is completely false; nothing has been simple about this claim. I'm extremely dissatisfied with SHW. I'm curious to see how they respond to my request for a full refund; if they resolve this matter acceptably, I'll come back & revise my review. Until then, I would strongly advise NOT purchasing a home warranty from this company.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE
August 14, 2023

1 STAR BECUASE I CAN'T LEAVE 0.

After making a claim on our washer, they sent a technician over who spent less than 10 minutes to investigate our machine. Never touched it, never ran it, never looked at. Just took down the model number and claimed it was the mother board. After googling the error myself it's a pump or drain error. This company won't send anyone else out to look at the machine and are only giving us a fraction of the cost of a new appliance.

Definitely rethinking our business with them- especially since we call about claims the calls are outsourced and accents are so strong it's impossible to have a conversation or understand what should be done.

VERY TIRED OF ALL THE CRAP IT TAKES TO GET ANY ACTION.

STEER CLEAR
August 10, 2023

Avoid this company at all costs! They are scammers! I placed a first service request with them when my attic fan stopped working. I was told I'd be notified when an appointment was scheduled. I was never notified but logged in to the portal and saw that they scheduled an appointment with a contractor (without even checking if the time worked for me). The contractor specializes in water damage restoration so not sure how they'd be selected to work on an attic fan in the first place. The day of the scheduled repair comes and no one ever showed up. My fiancé called SHW and they told him nothing was ever scheduled and that they'd be calling once something was. At this point it was over a week since the initial claim. I called them a few days later to follow up and they stated that a contractor came to our house, spoke to my fiancé, looked at and diagnosed the issue on our "AC unit". First of all, no one was ever at our home, second of all, the attic fan was the item that needed to be serviced, not my AC unit. Someone would need to enter my home to look at the attic fan which never happened. I was told I'd be connected to a supervisor to review my concerns. Well, no supervisor was available to speak to me and I was told they'd call me back within 3 hours. It's been over 3 weeks since I was told I'd get a call back from a supervisor. I've called multiple times a week to try to cancel my plan and get a refund and each time I get connected to a representative that spends over 10 minutes trying to convince me to stay with them, and after telling them I'm not interested and just want to cancel my plan I'm told that I need to speak to a supervisor and that "no one is available at this time and they'll call me back". I have yet to receive this call to cancel. At this point I'm beyond frustrated and I just want a refund as I paid for 3 years in full. Their communication is absolutely terrible, they are liars and scammers. DO NOT BUY A PLAN WITH THIS COMPANY!

Stay AWAY! This company is VERY Bad!
August 10, 2023

I bought a policy from them on Nov. 11,2023, and on December 21,2023, my dishwasher broke so I placed a claim to them. They refused to pay for repair citing their policy of 30-day coverage before a claim can be made! I'm not sure what calendar or calculator they are using! They ignored my attorney's letters to them so I have filed a claim with the States review board.
I continued to pay my monthly premiums until the end of July when I called and asked them to cancel because I was selling my condo and reminded them their service was lousy. They kept me on the phone for almost 1 hour trying to upsell me while transferring me from one person to another who would try even harder to upsell me to KEEP A POLICY ON A HOUSE I WAS SELLING IN A FEW DAYS! They were all like robots not listening to my reason for cancelling! I ended up having to scream at them to cancel my account for them to eventually agree to do so with a refund, only to have ANOTHER DEBIT TAKEN OUT four days later and no refund! The 'Sponserer's' reviews are paid for so don't be fooled by them.
I am a real estate investor and have relationships with thousands of other investors; I will certainly warn them all against this company!

DO NOT PURCHASE!
August 8, 2023

In my 43 years of living, I have never been this disgusted by a company. For the past four months, I have been in dispute with Select Home Warranty (SHW) about an appliance issue I won't bore readers with. Suffice it to say, I have quoted from the contract to support my argument, but still, nothing. I have sent lengthy emails stating my case and spoken to numerous customer service reps about the issue. Each time I call in (because good luck on getting SHW to contact you re. An issue in writing or via phone), it is obvious my emails haven't been read. The company has no regard for customers' time and no integrity to uphold its contractual obligations. Keep in mind, the salespeople are quick, efficient, and American; however, the customer service reps are all based off-shore and speak poor English. Their area of expertise is giving customers the polite run-around. SHW brags about its customer service being available 24/7, but the fact is the customer service reps have no authority to help the customer in any real way, and apparently, are not permitted to connect customers to anyone with authority. SHW is fond of quoting the lowest service call fee in the industry. That may be, but based on our experience, you will be getting low-bid service techs with dubious qualifications. Claims are extremely slow to process, require extensive documentation, and in the end, they will try to find a reason to deny the claim. If, by chance, you are successful in obtaining a small claim reimbursement, you will wait months for the check. If you read through the positive reviews, it seems they generally refer to the sales process and the contractual coverage. There are very few positive reviews from customers who have actually tried to file a claim – you'll need to look in the one-star ratings for those.

Paid $4,730 dollars for rental home warranty coverage (5 years' worth) contract# *******, tried to file a small claim for a refrigerator that went out Aug 1. Received nothing but the run around from this company. 7 different calls from 7 different Select Home Warranty "agents" from the Philippines; each asking identical questions and promising "We are attempting to contact a repair person" I have requested a charge back from my Credit Card company and I also plan to file a consumer complaint with The NJ Attorney General for fraud. This company needs to be shut down for operating in bad faith. Please do not waste your time with them, they will take your money and not pay claims.

Scam Company
August 1, 2023

They continually sent the same three numbers for air conditioner repair, one disconnected, one said he would no longer work with the company because they don't pay, and the other non working. This went on for almost three months. Finally, they said i could hire someone and have the person call in...i did that. The contractor was on the phone with them for 40 minutes giving diagnosis. They said to have him fix it if i could no longer wait and they would send the reimbursement amount in 48 hours. I paid, it was fixed and they sent nothing. When i contacted them again, they played the same game of trying to say we will call you back but i persisted. When i finally got to a 'supervisor' i was told because i had the air conditioner fixed they were denying the claim...This company is a scam beware.

I have filed many claims with this company and only one has been paid. The last claim was the final straw. My A/C broke (when it was 100 degrees outside). They took weel over a week to approve the claim, then wanted to see the last 3 years of maintenance records for the A/C, knowing I bought this warranty with the house purchase. NEVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!

The first time I attempted to use this policy was 3 months into my newly purchased home living. I purchased the policy because I was moving to a different state where I knew no one and wanted vetted contractors in case something went wrong with the home.

I am having electrical issues with the outlets not working in my master bedroom. I filed a claim and received a call back the next day stating that the technicians were backed up and they wanted me to find my own electrician, but would only cover x amount of the service call even though I had to find my own AND I needed to get them on the phone while the electrician was there (more than a 30 minute hold time the first time I called into them). I asked for a refund since they failed to provide services, they said they would work on it and call me back the next day and I said that was fine.

The next day we went through the same thing and I asked to speak to a supervisor after being told the technicians were too busy to come to me... backed up. Well, I live in a rural place (5k people in the whole county) so I could see this and I asked the supervisor exactly how long it would take the electricians to get to me, he said they aren't backed up, they just don't have contracts with anyone near me so they have no service providers for my need. They have tried to call the electricians around me and no one wants to work with them! That's why it would be better if called them myself...paid for the fees and they would reimburse me?!?!?!? No, I'd like a refund.

2 more days and calls of promises of securing a provider, speaking with supervisors, etc. Same run around and empty promises, no one calling me back that said they would call me back. They have taken more than a week!

I feel like a broken record- requesting a refund, requesting to cancel services/subscriptions. They finally did today- BUT are taking $75 cancellation fee, prorated refund up until TODAY- NOT LAST WEEK WHEN I INITIALLY REQUESTED THE REFUND, and I'll see that refund in 3-4 weeks, don't forget the initial 30 days that you can't file a claim... that doesn't count in the pro-rated refund as non-applied time.

THESE PEOPLE ARE SHADY AND LIE!

Scam - Buyer Beware
July 24, 2023

I signed up with Select Home Warranty on 8/3/21 and paid Select $1417 for a 3 year contract. I needed a repair service for my rental unit which is not conveniently nearby.
My first claim was for an air conditioner fix in June 2022. My tenant complained because it was taking Select so long (a couple weeks) to send someone out. Since it was taking Select so long to send someone out, I used my own repairman to fix the problem. Select attributed the delay in finding a repairman due to demand caused by hot weather. However, it only took me a few phone calls to find someone who could come out the next day.
I submitted another claim in August 2022 to repair a leaking refrigerator. This same problem reoccurred a month later. When I requested Select to send someone to repair, they said I had used up all of my credits and would not honor my request despite my telling them they didn't fix this problem the first time. I ended up again finding my own repair service who replaced the evaporator fan motor and defrosted and drained the lines as needed. I was charged $563 which Select refused to pay. I contacted Select several times but Select was unresponsive.
By this time, I was so unhappy with Select I asked them to cancel my contract and refund the unused prorated portion of my contract. I figured I was due approximately 2/3rds of my initial payment or approximately $935. Later I was shocked to only receive $61.69. When I called, they told me according to the contract, they subtracted the previous service calls plus some cancellation fee. What a rip-off! I'm partially to blame for not seeing this in their contract and not thoroughly researching the best home warranty companies.
I'm writing this to alert any potential Select Warranty customers to make sure to read the contract's fine print.
Also despite several requests for a full accounting of how they arrived a the $61 payment, I haven't received a detailed accounting.

Paid this company for 21 months never filed a single claim. My AC unit was not hitting the set point on the thermostat. I filed a claim, and the repairman that select sent out didn't even put a cage on the HVAC system. He said it might have a Freon leak and might be low a pound or two. So he called select home warranty or authorization and they said no we're not covering anything. And by the way we're going to charge you $100 for doing absolutely nothing. I Paid my $75 cancellation fee and cancelled my contract. Telling all my friends and neighbors just what kind of company they are, highly recommend you keep looking for a good home warranty company I know there are much better out there than this company.

I called to have our ice maker repaired, just purchased their Platinum Plan in May. Said it was not covered but for another $500, service fee and not including parts they would add it to the plan. No, please cancel the contract and refund our money. Sorry no supervisor available, will contact you in 48hrs (India call center). NO, after some discussion and letting them know, they were dealing with a Disabled Combat Vet and a retired govt employee, ok will contact you in 4hrs. Guess what no call, just an email informing us to call them. Called them (again in India call center), no supervisor available will contact you in 48hr. Contacted their claim complaints, general information, customer service and marketing partners departments all by email. NO CONTACT BACK. This was yesterday. Avoid this company!

On July 7,2022, I signed a 3-year contract with Select Home Warranty LLC to cover my appliances. On Fri, Jun 2,2023, I submitted a claim to fix my washer. On Monday, June 19th the technician arrived at my home to replace the parts which were sent to me by the warranty company. The technician was not able to repair the washer as the part was defective and another required part was not sent to me at all. I contacted the warranty company multiple times asking them to send me new working parts and fix the unit but do not get any feedback from them. The only solution they offered is $200 which is not enough to replace the unit. Considering this, I asked the warranty company to terminate my policy as I do not get any help from them and reimburse my prorated payment which I made when bought this policy. However, the representatives of this company keep saying that they will charge me for the parts even though the part was defective and another required part was not sent to me. I agree to send the defective part back to them but they refuse to accept it and want to charge me for it. It sounds like fraud from them because they are sending the defective part to the customers and refusing to get them back.
