It has a lot of cowboys on there, just go somewhere else, I wish I had. The web site makes its money from the builders on it so they, which makes for a big conflict of interest.
I run a small property maintenance business in Stockport, and thought like many it would help me to boost my customer base by joining "My builder" I was invited directly by a customer, to price decorate a hall-stairs-landing, as she had seen previous work I'd done. When you respond to an invite you are automatically charged a fee for that lead.(£15 in my case) I went round at time to suit, went through the whole job with her, priced it all up to be told by her that she never had any intention of having the work done. She just wanted to see how much was saving by doing it herself! I complained that it was wrong of them to expect £15 payment for this as surely this must have come up during their so called rigorous screening process?! No answer other than basically tough. Pay up. It the idea is good in principle but ultimately a lot of people use this service as a fact finding exercise to save them the legwork. Which is one reason why I feel that when a tradesman does get a job through them, they boost the price to compensate for this shortfall costing in dead leads.
I live in London and used MyBuilder to engage AW Roofing & Building, a Bramhall, Stockport handyman to cure a leak in a small Reddish shop. He diagnosed a hole in a small roof as the problem and charged £150 to stick a 5" square of Flashband on it. It still leaked, from a radiator in an upstairs flat. He refused to meet me on site, said the continued leak was 'not my problem' and became hostile and aggressive when I put a negative review on MyBuilder. Their CEO said he won't telephone him as he telephoned me because AW has so many positive reviews. He said putting the negative review on their site has reduced my options. Caveat Emptor.
The builder was wonderful to work with. Built a solid foundation and that was it. The contractors he hired to sheet rock, paint, put the finish touches that make a house like the cabinets (which were awful) and the trim inside were terrible if you use this builder hire your own contractors. The people at Dalton Floors in Jasper and his tile people were wonderful. Also the heating and air people, plumber and electrician were top notch. Just very disappointed the builder did not check things after the work of the cabinet person, we have a lot of cabinets and from the outside it looks good when you look closer you can see how cheaply it was made without any care or concern with how the inside doors and draws were designed with cheap wood. Loved the builder, wish he chose better qualified finishers. The paint job inside was sloppy and after many attempts still not finished to our standards.
Would be good web page but unfortunately I guess they are cheating with fake job offers to charge the builders more. Lots of times I been shortlisted by client (what means have to pay fee to mybuilder) and didn't get any respond from them afterwards. Also I noticed that when you win the job they deleting other builders from the list. So it looks like just one person applied to that job.
I obtained this site from a relative who found a plaster to skim a room great job. I posted a cladding job to an exterior wall had three quotes and chose Direct Cladding from rainham Essex excellent service and good product plus competitive price
Hassle free and quick selection for someone to do one-off jobs for you.
This site really helped me get the work done on a couple of jobs I had been struggling to find trades for. Instead of me having to find numbers, leave messages, chase people they came to me. It meant I had properly interested parties in doing the work and I found them to be courteous and hard working. The messaging system works well once you get to grips with it or you can swap contact details once you have hired someone. It took me a little while to get to grips with the communication but once up and running it was great.
I will definitely use this site again.
Only invite businesses you intend to use though as they get charged and don't then have the opportunity to quote.
This is a good way of getting big and small jobs done and it must be helpful for builders and associated trades who can organise their time better. Using reviewed builders makes it safer for everyone although you might need to check skilled people are part of their appropriate regulatory bodies too. All the people I have used have been great and the job has got done with the minimum fuss. The process is simple and straightforward. It's a good organisation.
I've been really pleased with this site; it's very easy to use and enables me to communicate with relevant tradesman.
I've been able to see other peoples' reviews and experiences, and then meet and obtain estimates before committing to a specific company.
Now I would use this site before embarking on any project that would require a professional.
I have used this site on several occasions when stumped with finding someone to do a job. Brilliant idea, easy to use and the tradesmen have always been excellent and their work of a high standard. All of the quotes have been competitive. Now my 'go to' place if I need something fixing.
Feel very dissapointed with the service they provide.
You expect that the tradesmen listed are quality, realiable and trustworthy.
We had our money basically stolen by a tradesmen registered on the site, came round to view the job, we paid a deposit, and never saw him again.
The tradesmen did this to a few people from the mybuilder.com website which shows you how slow they were to react.
We did not recieve any help trying to get our money back
Or any decent advice on how to.
Or at the very least an apology.
I will never use a company like this again, you cannot trust the ratings, and you cannot trust the website.
My experience is shared along with several other trades persons. The service they offer works like this you pay a fee when you are shortlisted but that does not mean that you are in with a chance to quote for a job. On two occasions I have been shortlisted and could not get the client to agree to meet with me. I asked for a refund from my builder and was refused twice. It now makes me think that there are bogus clients out there that do not exist very similar to dating sites loads of photos of people who are not members and are not available my advice is be very suspicious of My builder and certainly don, t expect a refund.
All tradesmen pay a fee to mybuilder, the problem is you can get shortlisted and they make you pay when the jobs do not exist.
Tradesmen beware
I bought a house for the first time last year. New to the area and new to homeowning, I didn't know any local tradesmen or how to deal with repairs myself. I've found the site really useful for small jobs - all of the tradesmen I've used have been friendly, well priced and quick to respond to my queries. I'll definitely use the site again for future jobs.
Around two years ago we needed a part job done on our bathroom. We had visitors coming in a few weeks, so were in a rush. Unluckily we couldn't find anybody locally, so we settled for one in Yeovil. Bad choice. There wouldn't be enough room here to tell what we went through. We are in our eighties, so I suppose we are fair game for the type. We couldn't risk annoying him by withholding money or writing a bad review, we might have at least got a brick through the window, or set on one dark night, and who would know, or care? Eventually though I contacted My Builder by phone. All I got out of him, however, was, 'But he's the only plumber we have in that area'. It didn't strike me at the time, but is that the sort of response to get after a complaint of that nature?
I have used mybuilder.com a number of times to source tradesman - from laying a tile floor, to a bathroom refit, electrian and carpenter. I haven't experienced any issues - my dealing with the tradesman is always positive, prompt and the work to a high standard. I would only use this website to find a tradesman and have no hesitation in recommending their tradesmen!
Used this site 3 times now and found great guys to do the jobs (plumber/gas fitter, staircase/Joiner, tiler/ all round diy guy.
Really easy site and process to use, as a single girl, totally brilliant for sorting out the wheat from the cowboys!
This website has been a Godsend. Lots of rated competent tradesmen to choose from and the chance to praise them or leave the honest truth after the work is carried out.
Found several good tradesmen on MyBuilder. The website interface is clear and practical, facilitating the communication and making it easy to find the right people. I would recommend it.
Answer: From what I gather they just check. Insurances! No qualifications or registration checks at all!
Answer: Hi Mitsy, the service is completely free for homeowners.
Answer: Well you can always try, in anyway they would remove your reviews as they did mine. Depend which trader though! Some of them seems to be more protected than others...
