It's a waste of time. There are few individuals on it, that's assuming they are real profiles. You can't message anyone to find out because you need to pay for all contact with anyone. It's not free. It's not useful. Use Facebook, Craigslist for roommates. Both free both more chances of finding someone.
This is the 2nd time I tried using this site. I have never received a message. I get 10 a day or more on Facebook.
You'll create a profile and then see a bunch of others. Most of them are lame, no surprise, but some people put real effort into creating them. If you want to read messages or reply to them you have to pay. I paid $10/mo and have now messaged about 50 people. I wondered why nobody replied, but then I realized they would have to pay to reply. It's basically a scummy scam of a website. This pricing model sucks, and it makes it nearly impossible to actually use the site. They should at least give paying users a way to filter to only see other paying users, if those are the 1% we'll actually be able to contact.
Hello,
It's unfortunate that you did not have any luck finding a roommate on the site. Roommates.com is not a scam but a bulletin board service and we have assisted many users with finding a roommate.
Thank you for your comments they will be taken into consideration for future site improvements.
If you would like to give us another try contact us at support@roommates.com and we would be happy to give you tips on how to utilize the free portion of the site.

As the rating says: "Doesn't get any worse than this. Stay away!". I have been now for days trying to get a refund issued back to my card for a 60 day subscription to their service and they keep on trying to up-sell me...
I've told them many times, but they just don't listen.
Don't waste your time AND MONEY on this site. Now... I want my refund!
Utter waste of time and money. Thankfully, I only lost $20.00. Nothing worth paying for on this site. The free sites gave me more choices, matches and information. I knew better, but still fell for the "pay" to view more info on my matches ploy!
So I was sceptical at first, but after all was said and done I am happy with my experience here. It was easy to understand and they wont just keep charging you after what you pay for expires. Which is a huge plus for me, cause I get busy and forget.
Chloe Cruickshank and Emily Fleur Butler are completely untrustworthy. I was their roommate/landlord for three years, was understanding when they were frequently late on rent and didn't pay bills for months, and when they first moved in allowed them to pay less than a month for their deposit. At the end of their tenancy they stopped paying rent and bills entirely a month before they were scheduled to move out. They said their deposit would cover the rent. I was understanding again, because I trusted them, and they promised they would pay the outstanding bills.
Then, they stayed longer than their scheduled move out date, thereby owing the remaining rent missing from their deposit as well as an extra week's rent. Again, they promised repeatedly to pay the difference before they moved out.
Lo and behold, move out date arrives and they leave while I'm out, without paying me. They have been ghosting me ever since, in spite of texts, emails and calls begging them to pay me the nearly £1000 they owe me.
Not to mention, they left their room completely disgusting, the walls were covered with mold, the floor was littered with dirt, dust, trash, dirty socks and press-on nails. I honestly don't know how they were comfortable living like that, it was truly gross.
I'm a student without a lot of money myself, and have been left high and dry by two women whom I trusted. Don't make my mistake! They will lie if they want to get out of paying, and they are just plain gross.
Please, avoid Emily Fleur Butler and Chloe Cruickshank.
Hello, It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience with your tenants, but your review has nothing to do with our website Roommates.com. Please remove your review. Thank you, Roommates.com Support
I had a wonderful experience with Roommates.com last year. I had a roommate that was very thoughtful and kind. We hit it off from the very beginning. I would hope that all roommates were as great as Paula. Sadly, we had to move as our lease was up and she decided to get married. I recommend "roommates" at least as a starting place if you are looking to share expenses.
I've used Roommates.com 3-5 times in past years and up until now (2019) it was fine. But they've changed it and severely watered down the search criteria. Aside from what I say in my profile, if I simply want to conduct a search on my own, I cannot narrow it down to "female" for example nor can I narrow it down to a particular dollar amount for the rent or a particular age range. If I'd known about these changes, I never would have spent the $20 this time. Also, when I play the role of someone looking for a room (I am offering a room) and do a search that SHOULD turn up my posting, it does not show up!

I feel that sometimes it might take a little longer, but by far the best way to find someone to share your home with. Thank you roommate for your program, being a senior it is difficult to know who and what you might be getting, This program gives the opportunity to ck people out and end up with someone very special.
Inviting someone to share your home is stressful and risky for both parties. This is a nice way to get to know a little about the person without letting everything out all at once. This was my first experience with finding a roomer. Now, I have the extra funds I need to keep my household above water, and she has a safe comfortable place for much less than extended stay. My only small complaint is you must register every time you want to open a prospects profile. Not a big problem but it seems a little unnecessary.
Overall, this company reached the people who might be interested in renting where I live. I will use them again.
4* for not making everyone pay and the limited number of people I can communicate with inside the app. I used roommates.com to find a roommate to move into my place in 2005 and again after I moved in 2007 (14 years, then he moved out and got married). I'm looking again and pickings are a little slim since I am looking for only a mature/no drama male. I am a woman and prefer not to tell someone my name and where I live until my fiance and I have had a chance to meet and chat with them, so Facebook is not an option. So, I'm resigned to paying $15 a month and staying on top of the new listings so I can contact potential renters before they get jaded by the scammers. It isn't perfect, but I don't blame the site for that and they do have a report button and you can block people from messaging you. If they can't read my message and aren't willing to pay $15 to find a place to live, they probably aren't going to pay $45 for a background/credit check or pay their rent either so I won't contact them off-site. As far as paying, do you work for free? I'd love to find a roommate site that does a background/credit check as part of the sign-up process, would get rid of the scammers and some of the non-paying and violent/dishonest roommates and well worth the price.
Waste of time. You spend some time making a profile to list your available room, get excited about it, but you can't actually see messages from interested tenants without paying? I feel they should make it more obvious from the get-go that you have to pay to actually read messages. Thank you for wasting my time.
Hello,
We have tried to make it pretty easy to find information on how the site works. On our main website page under the More Info tab at the top, there is the Frequently Asked Questions page. Number one states 'Basic membership is FREE. As a basic member you can add a profile, browse your matches and send RoomMail messages. In order to read messages received from other members, you must become a Choice Member. Fees for Choice Membership are as follows: $5.99 for our 3 day trial, $19.99 for 30 days, and $29.99 for 60 days.'
You always have the option of sending your contact information in the free messages that you send out and posting it in the Comments section of your profile. This can assist in using the site for free and help accomplish your goals of finding a roommate.

Roommates.com Customer Support
I'm a very picky professional - I recommend Roommates.com as it is easy, efficient and has good quality members. It is well worth the $30 to help with such an important area of our lives! Customer service was very responsive, too when I couldn't log on once
Roommates is a great quick service if you are looking for a roommate/s. We have used it 2 times and have been successful both times. We have been fortunate to find good drama free roommates. Like everything else, you need to be careful and interview prospective roommates and renters as well thoroughly. When in doubt, don't rent it out or other way around.
Once again, Roommates.com was an awesome help. The last roommate I found through this site three years ago still is very responsible, mature and easy to get along with but her company is moving and now so is she. My new roommate certainly seems to be the same and I found her within two weeks. Much better "selection or roomies" - I'd hesitate to write that but we both felt that way - than with the free online ads. Thanks for so improving my life; for turning what could be a nightmare process into something of a breeze.
I've used Roommates.com twice in the past year, and have had excellent success both times. Yes, there are scammers. (Just use your common sense.) Yes, it costs money. ($20 is a great investment to find someone you're going to be living with for a year!) Yes, it works. I would highly recommend it. Not everyone you email will respond, and not everyone who responds to your post will be someone you emailed. But by using the website's mail feature to communicate with potential roomies before giving out any personal information, you should be able to find a great match. It's worked for me twice, and I'll definitely use them again when the time comes! Good luck, be safe, and enjoy your new roommate!
Step 1: Make a profile. If you want to go to Step 2, you have to pay. Would be nice to get a few free messages to try it out. I have a feeling some of the emails I'm receive are from fake accounts trying to contact me, so I will pay for roommates.com's upgraded services to read the messages. The term "upgrade" should really be "basic" services. You can't even view other members enlarged profile pictures. This is the only review I've ever made on a service. I feel that this business model is sooo poor, I had to comment. There have been so many complaints about this and the company still hasn't changed it's business model. Shows what Roommates.com really care about. $$$
Hello,
I'm sorry you didn't like the way the site works. Once you make your profile you can send out unlimited messages for free. Many members have been successful using the site for free by including their contact information in the messages they send out so that only one of you has to upgrade.
We appreciate your comments and will take them into consideration for future site improvements.

Every day or so I get a "match" with a name, gender maybe age, nothing else. I've gotten other "matches" from those who don't read the description and want to apply even though they are a couple and the lease only allows one person. I've a paid member. Won't renew for the 2nd month and will never use again.
Hello,
We are sorry that you are unhappy with how the site works.
Due to the open nature of our website, members are not required to fill out specific criteria regarding themselves or their preferences. Members who choose not to fill out certain parts of their profile such as gender, will be matched with you as long as the portion they do fill out matches your listing. As a bulletin board service we are unable to keep members that don't match your criteria from contacting you.
If you haven't found a roommate yet and want to give us another try, please contact us at support@roommates.com and we would be happy to give you some tips on how to get more matches and hopefully find a roommate, even with the free portion of the site.

A free account is great for everything (except actually communicating with potential roommates or looking at pictures - you have to pay for that). Outdated site, no mobile app, limited abilities... and when I deactivated my account by selecting "Not satisfied with Roommates.com" I received a congratulatory email wishing me luck with the roommate I definitely didn't find on their site. Horrible site.
Hello,
We are sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience on the site. We will be coming out with an updated version of the site soon to make it more compatible friendly. You are able to use the site for free by sending your contact information in the free messages you send out. Countless members have been able to use the site for free that way, but there are always extra advantages to purchasing an upgrade, as with most sites.
It's unfortunate that you received an incorrect response from one of our agents, but it does look like they apologized and offered you a free upgrade for the mistake.
If you would like to take advantage of the free upgrade and get some helpful tips for your profile please let us know and we will apply it to your account. We hope you will give us another try!

I started off my search with a free account at roomster.com and almost did not sign up for this site. Roomster was not user friendly nor did it turn up half as good results as roommates. I got a half off deal and it was well worth the full price. I found my roommate and will be moving in about a month. Thank you to all the designers, it was a wonderful experience.
Hello,
Congratulations on finding a roommate! We are so glad the site worked well for you.
Thank you for giving us a try!

Answer: Yeah, if you are looking for crazy drunk high on drugs kind of people and it doesn't matter if you are male or female, after a couple of weeks, if that, they also get this crazy idea that they own you and can control your every thought move and somehow make themselves believe they are not renting a room, but using the web site to find a wife or husband type without the vows! This is not just based on one incident, but an average of 8 years of using the site on both sides. First I was renting rooms and the same applies and then I needed to rent a room which the same description applies. But understand, it is an web site for others to use. The users are the problem, not the site. It is amazing what I have experienced with all of what I said. I would think of another solution if I were you unless you want to learn as I did and I don't think it is a good idea. I would not write this if I did not know it all to well to be 1000% TRUE! I do not understand what these type of people are doing? Maybe they are a little to lonely or because you are renting a room or you need to rent a room that you do not have your own life and therefore they can take advantage of your sanity. I'm not sure, but I sure have had enough of these people for the past eight years that I have moved on to other roommate sites. Guess What? The same thing! Sorry, wish I could give a thumbs up, but No Can Do! Good luck
