Like many others I was charged for a monthly subscription after cancelling. I did however contact their customer support and they resolved the issue in a timely manner and refunded the money. I would suggest Scribd review their cancel subscription flow on the website to make it an easier one step process, and they should send monthly emails upon charging the account also and to confirm cancellation. I initially signed up for this service because they had some content I was looking for that was hard to find elsewhere. Would give this 5 stars if not for the issue with overcharging and being sneaky. Mixed feelings overall.
Stay away from Scribd. I set up a free trial to see what it was all about and then cancelled 2 weeks before the end of the free trial. They stilled charged my PayPal $9.99. They only provide a banner on your account saying that you have successfully cancelled, but no email confirming the cancellation.
I disputed the charge with PayPal, but PayPal wants a "billing statement" and a "confirmation of cancellation" which Scribd doesn't provide. PayPal then denied my dispute, so Scribd now has my money and I can't get it back. I'm disabled and just lost my job, so losing this money is painful to me after all that has happened in 2020.
Hi Michael, this definitely doesn't sound right! It sounds like the charge you're seeing is due to either a duplicate account with an active subscription or an unsuccessful cancellation. To clarify, it is absolutely impossible for us to bill a canceled account as you are no longer rendering services with us.
With all of that being said, we'd be more than happy to assist with any cancellation/refund issues. If you have already opened a support ticket with us, please update your review with the ticket number that you received. Otherwise, please use the link here to submit a ticket: https://scr.bi/assist
Once this is done, a specialist will follow up right away to make sure this gets taken care of for you. Thanks so much!
So done with Scribd. In the last couple of years, I was impressed with Scribd, I was about to purchase memberships for all of my many family members as a Christmas gift. However, they recently placed major limits on audio-book access. Then, they placed limits on digital book access. Now you can get better material through Google and Youtube. What a let down this is. They should replace whoever is making executive decisions at Scribd with a magic-eight ball. They are likely to have better results. Like many other members, I'm leaving. It is a waste of time and money. Scribd has become a joke.
I initially got this app to allow me to access some documents for my school works. I was on a free trial initially but kept it for another month but then cancelled. I made sure to go through all the screens while cancelling - even when they try and trick you into not fully cancelling. So I thought I had cancelled but was shocked when I checked my account to see they had been taking money every months since I cancelled. This is about 6 months of monthly bills and of course how convenient that they have a 30 day refund rule to avoid paying up for scams like this. I am really disappointed and I have sent an email to customer support but with still no reply 2 weeks later despite them promising a typical reply within 3 days. I am going to get my money back because that is just unfair and unethical. Never touch this app. NEVER give your account details no matter what you do.
Hi Amy, we're sorry for any confusion surrounding our cancellation process. When you cancel your subscription with us, you will immediately receive a confirmation email of the cancellation to your primary email address on file. If you did not receive this confirmation email from us, then the subscription cancellation was not completed successfully. We go over this in detail in our cancellation guide, found here: https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210134046-How-to-cancel-your-premium-membership
With that being said, we'd be happy to take a second look and escalate your case to a specialist so they can make things right. Feel free to update your review with your ticket number so we can connect you ASAP. Thanks!
I have contacted Scribd twice using their help system regarding an issue with my account. Two weeks have gone by with no update or response from them. They had the nerve to close my one ticket with no resolve or comment.
Stay away from this website. A bunch of crooks that will run themselves out of business.
Hi there, I sent you a message on here last week, on January 24 requesting some more information in order to assist you further. Please let me know the ticket number or email address you used when you wrote in and I can assist. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I have been trying to cancel this membership since July! I just received my American Express bill and I have been charged $8.99 twice AGAIN! When you email at the address that they suggest, you get a 'canned' response even if it is on a Sunday asking for more information. Something is not right about this company.
Hi Gary - I'm sorry to hear about your unexpected charges. In order for us to locate the charges in our system and issue a refund, we'll need your help. Please update your review with your Ticket Number, and I'll be able to help you out, personally. Thank you!
Scribd used to be unlimited and now it isn't. That part I could live with but the new app is clumsy and difficult to filter--you often end up with some BS an individual is hawking as a 'book'--nothing from an actual publisher. The audiobooks get mixed in and you think you found a book you like but, no--it's only the audio version. Amazon Unlimited is far superior, and BookBub emails me books every day that I can buy for. 99-2.99 of authors and best sellers.
Can't log in to scribd account and nobody replies to the emails I send, I'm still in my 30 trial days but if no one is responding to emails I'm going to be billed for something I can't use... I

I have now had the account sort by customer services, it took a while to get someone to answer me but they were very quick to resolve my problem which I can not grumble at. Perhaps this company is perhaps a victim of its own success and hasn't the manpower to cover a good working customer service as we would expect to see.
Hi Dan! I'm so glad to hear that your issue was resolved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at support@scribd.com should you have any questions in the future. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Service
I don't understand how Scribd is allowed to be in existence. This site is HORRIBLE. I can't find any positive reviews and there are thousands upon thousands of complaints. One they get your credit card number or debit card, it's all over for you from there. They put out a generic email response as if their concerned however myself and thousands of others know this is for show. Twice they haven't allowed me to change my credit card number telling me it was invalid and better yet... wants you to add ANOTHER credit/debit number. I implore everyone to stay away from these thieves. I got burned twice from these thieves. Never again.
Hi Morgan - I'm so sorry to hear about your unexpected charges. As anyone who has made a complaint can attest to, all you have to do is send us an email to help@scribd.com and we will absolutely issue a refund and ensure your subscription is canceled.
Every month about 5-7 days before my subscription payment is due... the next book i need in this series is not available. And I was told that's when Author would release it. Funny it's always on my subscription payment date. Happened again this month. Stop now im shopping for a new service. I don't need to be limited on what i can do because Scribd wants to get their payment first... sad
Hi Kimberly - My apologies for any confusion and I'm happy to explain what's happening further. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com with ATTENTION JAMES in the subject line and I'll be happy to resolve this for you!
I really hate this site. Even though they mention it as free trail once you give your card details without any confirmation they would charge money. Even after deleting my account still they charged money for that. Waste of use.
Hi Swetha - we're happy to help with a refund. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com. Thanks!
The best customer service. Something went wrong with my account cancellation and I was charged again. I contacted Scribd on Facebook and had a fast reply and a refund. Very friendly! I read a lot of bad reviews before and got worried. I would like to rest you assure that there is nothing to worry about. They are genuinely good and helpful guys!
Hi Alina! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this thoughtful feedback about Scribd! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd has withdrawn funds from my account without permission for 7 months now. I have sent them 3 "Support Tickets" and they appeared as if they were trying to be helpful, but they have not helped me whatsoever. I am furious and sick and tired of this business with their terrible customer support and business practices. Scribd, you should be ashamed of yourself. You, as a company, know what you're doing and you are awful people for letting is go on like this for so many people.
Hi Joseph, we sent an email last week requiring further information to locate your account. Once we are able to locate the account, we will be able to further assist you with any refunds. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I am also a victim of their fraud.
I have cancelled the membership within 30 day free trial period. I was told by scribd that if you cancel within this period, no charges will be made. I have given them the transaction number and my email address. They say that the email address does not exist and asking tonnes of information about my account which I now fear to share details with them. I will wait for a couple more days and then close my bank account as I cannot see them debiting my account every month. Never expected this from you, Scribd. The request number is *******
Hi Ashish! We've located your subscribed account and have replied to your support ticket 1248254 with more information regarding your refund. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
This week i just realised that scribd have been deducting my money for the past 4months without notifying me. I have contacted their support and was promised a refund for only ONE MONTH. Yesterday they refunded me the money but short after the same amount was deducted by scribd from my account. Also i have been contacting them for another three months of refund since the transaction was made without any notice or email. I read very bad reviews on how scribd keeps on deducting money, i certainly wont hesitate to report and take action against scribd inc if the same thing happen to me
My ticket number: *******
Hi Pana, we're sorry for any confusion here and we'd be happy to clarify.
When you purchased the trial, you agreed to the terms and conditions under the Scribd Paid Access End User License Agreement (https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210129486-Scribd-Paid-Access-End-User-License-Agreement) that stated this was not a one-time purchase, but instead a recurring month to month subscription. Scribd does not offer a standalone free trial.
With that being said, per our Refund Policy, we are unable to issue refunds beyond 30 days. You can read more about this here: https://bit.ly/3ebvRZY
I have never heard of Scribd before and don't even read books. I got a charge for 8.99 on my scotia bank visa and disputed this right away, in which i got my money back from Visa as Scribd could not prove that I purchased from them. 2 weeks later, i get a replacement credit card and use it again. 2 weeks after that I get charged from Scribd AGAIN. Like other reviews here, i'm not sure how this is possible but other people complained about replacing their cards and still getting charged.
I have sent an e-mail to Scribd because their number *******348 is apparently "busy" everytime i dial it. I have not received a response from Scribd via e-mail yet even though they said they'd reply in 24 hours.
Be careful if you see Scribd on your statement, they are scammers and frauds!
Hi Marie! We've just replied to your ticket requesting a bit more information in order to locate the charges. Thanks! - Zoe, Scribd Customer Support
It is most unfortunate, but I have not idea what Scribd has been charging me for each month. Scribd refuses to talk, or write me back, regarding my concern. The lack of communication by Scribd is certainly correctly reflected in the surrounding angry reviews.
Hi Gary - I'm so sorry to hear this and it's unacceptable that you haven't received a response from us. Have you sent an email to help@scribd.com? If so, could you please reply here with your ticket number and I'll personally make sure your issue is resolved. Thank you!
I opened up my account few months back and kept for some academic research. Since they were not having quality stuff, I cancelled my membership on May 2018. They show in my account that the account is cancelled and I can't subscribe any more, however, they keep on charging $8.99 from my account every month. The pity is, there is no cs phone number and email or posting complain is the only option. I explained them via email but they simply wrote back that there is no purchase from my account recently. They are neither refunding nor cancelling this recurring payment. Very pathetic experience. Not recommended to anyone.
Hi Arpit - I'm sorry to hear about your unexpected charges. Most likely, the charges are from a second account you created with an alternate email address. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to resolve this with you!
My wife signed up for Scribd and when she was one day late cancelling, they charged her for a year, $120. All information she was given was that they would charge monthly, so we are shocked that they stole $120. They refuse to give the money back. I am reporting them to the Illinois Attorney General's office in hopes that a criminal investigation will be undertaken since this is clearly illegal.
Hello Mathew, I am happy to help explain any charges and look into the refund request. Did your wife submit a support request? If you have a ticket number please share it with me so I can look into the account. If not please ask her to submit a ticket through this link and the request will be escalated straight to my inbox: bit.ly/social-support-help
Thanks! -LC
I was billed twice in one month. I have sent multiple emails including screenshots but am yet to get a response from scribd. I subscribed using with paypal on their mobile site but it did not reflect on my android app. Entered my credit card info and got billed again with my plan showing it will expire in a month instead of two months. Very poor customer service.

Thanks for your comment here - I am so sorry you had trouble canceling! Please know, we have absolutely no intention of being sneaky at all when it comes to cancelations, and we do have support articles on how to cancel if you are interested. I have linked one here for your convenience; https://bit.ly/2AhGzis
That said, however, thank you for your feedback about possibly integrating an easier cancelation process. I am happy to report that this is actually something our Product Design team is currently working on! Whenever we receive a report that our cancelation process is too difficult, we do pass it along to them as an additional example of this issue, so I have passed this one along to them as well. I am truly hopeful we will see something simpler released in the near future and I thank you for your patience in the meantime!
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us at help@scribd.com at any time and one of our agents will assist you as soon as possible. Otherwise, thank you again for your comment here and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!
