IXL is a website designed to cause kids to fail and demoralize them. It may seems like a generic, fairly useful math learning website at first sight, but no. I will go over the main problem first. The point system.
The points system functions by giving you a few points when you get an answer correct, and takes away points when you get a question wrong. Apart from this not being the best way to go about something like this in the first place, IXL has furthered the problem by designing it horribly. IXL consistently takes more points than it gives, which is obviously a terrible choice. Say you get nearly to 80 points, but get a single problem wrong, this can result in the lost of 20, sometimes even 30 points! Keep in mind this occurs when the student usually only gets 2-6 points per question correctly answered. This problem is furthered when the student is put in a situation where they only earn a single point for the last few points. This leads me to the next issue. The challenge zone.
The challenge zone is a section you unlock when you reach ninety points on the test you are currently taking. The challenge zone causes you to earn less points, lose more points, and have (assumedly) harder question than before. When this system is paired with the extreme punishment for losing points, and unfair gifting of points, it can easily lead to mind numbing minutes turned into hours as a student gets a single thing wrong and all progress is lost.
In conclusion, IXL is a truly terrible website that either needs to be completely overhauled to be valid and usable, or removed completely. IXL has a system meant to demoralize children and makes them shy away from learning.
This website makes everyone frustrated and is actually discouraging kids to not do work and it doesn't help any kids and adults!
I remember doing this in school and it made me hate learning. No matter the subject IXL could make me hate it
