With hesitation due to mixed reviews, I recently used Greentoe and made a ridiculously low offer on a Sony 70-200 2.8 GM II ($2200) thinking, "There's no way any authorized retailer would accept that offer."
Not surprisingly, after two days, I received a counteroffer for $2399. I didn't respond and let it sit, waiting for the offer to expire.
The day before my initial offer expired, I received notice that my initial offer of $2200 was accepted! I was shocked.
Before submitting payment, I emailed Greentoe customer service, asking for reassurance and re-confirmation of what they advertise:
- Merchandise will be sold by a USA-authorized Sony dealer and covered by a Sony USA manufacturer warranty.
- Items being sold are brand new, unopened
- The merchant accepting the offer actually has the item in stock and is ready to ship (I asked this after reading several reviews that stated the retailer delayed shipment for several weeks/months before finally either admitting the item was out-of-stock, issuing a refund, or having the customers' CC company do a chargeback)
I asked Greentoe customer service to confirm the above, stating that I would immediately ask for a refund if this transaction didn't pass the "smell test".
- I also stated if this deal was good, I would make sure to share my good experience with dealing with Greentoe in as many forums as possible
- Conversely, if this deal went bad, I would make sure to share my bad experience in the same platforms. In addition, I would consider filing a small claims suit if I didn't get my money back.
Greentoe customer service ("Jeff") assured me of all of the above, even stating that they would issue a refund if the retailer didn't ship out the item by end-of-day after I made payment.
I ended up taking a chance and paid the merchant through Paypal.
Surprisingly, the very next day, I received a UPS shipment notification.
UPS delivered the lens a little less than a week later. Well, all I can say is that GREENTOE HAS EARNED MY BUSINESS AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GIVING THEM A TRY!
My lens arrived today, well packaged. It was clearly brand new with a USA Warranty card. I immediately registered the lens at Sony USA without any issues.
Wow, I still can't believe I was able to get this lens (70-200 2.8 OSS II) brand new for only $2,200 - which includes shipping and tax! That is less than what I could have purchased a new gray market lens on Ebay and about what I could likely purchase an excellent condition USED lens for.
If you're on the fence with Greentoe, give them a try. And make sure you ask for confirmation from Greentoe's customer service (i.e., the seller has the item IN STOCK AND READY TO SHIP, etc.), as I did before pulling the trigger. You won't regret it!
(I have no connection whatsoever to Greentoe and am sharing my own experience - your experience may vary).

I have ordered from Greentoe in the past with no issues. I have only used them for photography equipment, and in the past I have submitted offers, had them be accepted, the item shipped quickly, and it arrived to me quickly and it was evident that the item was exactly as described. I believe that this company is struggling due to COVID, but still, I really think they should be more transparent with customers. 9 days ago I submitted an offer on a mirrorless camera, so excited to save a substantial amount of money on a big purchase. My offer was accepted 15 minutes later, great! A day or two later I got to see the dealer and it seemed like a legit, perfectly reputable dealer. Fast forward to 4-5 days later, and the order still says "pending shipment". Greentoe advertises that their dealers ship out in 1-2 days, so I inquired to customer service (only accessible by email, btw, and their response times are between 12-24 hours most times so don't expect anything quickly). I was essentially included in a group email with the dealer, and it was up to me to be the "squeaky wheel" or else nothing would be done. After a day or two with no response from the dealer company, I reached out for an update and was told by Greentoe to give the dealer a call myself. Sure, I can do your job for you. I call the dealer and I'm informed that they don't have the camera in stock and are awaiting their shipment, which they believed should be in a few days but could be as long as a few weeks. I'm so irritated at this point. Never on the page for this camera was I informed that I would be submitting an offer on a camera that was not in stock, or that the dealer may have the item on backorder. It was only when I called the supplier my self that I was informed of this. Days later, I call the dealer again and Im informed that they have ZERO timeline of when the camera will be in stock. Could be tomorrow, could be a month from now, could be in two months. I emailed customer service about this, expressing my complete disappointment and how I felt misled. You would think they would only allow dealers with the item IN STOCK to accept offers, but apparently not. I had to write three emails to Greentoe over the course of two days in order to start the process of cancelling my order, and during this time I was not apologized to and also did not receive any sort of explanation or excuse even as to why I was able to order from a dealer who did not have the item in stock. I was offered to have my deal switched to a different dealer who DOES have the item in stock (for more money), but at this point I chose to take my business elsewhere. We'll see if the cancellation even goes through or how long that entire process will take. At this point, I'm really not expecting competency from Greentoe in any way. Very disappointing experience after many positive ones, but I just can't recommend the company to anyone else in good conscience anymore.
