I have rented from Getaround 54 times to try and be an Uber Driver. My decision to drive with Uber was brought on by my wife being laid off at her job. I have 3 small kids at home and as such drove most consistently between the hrs of midnight - 8 am because 1. My kids are sleeping and 2. Those are the most consistent earning hours with Uber.
I started right after Thanksgiving on Nov. 26th and in 5 days had already spent $206.46 on rentals while only earning $496.64 from Uber. PLEASE do not be fooled it sounds like I made $200ish right WRONG! Every rental you have to fill back up, so there's that cost. The nearest rental to me is 20 miles away so there's gas to get there and back. Then there was usually a snack, cause you're driving. By time you add these figures in I actually only made less than $50 for 20 hrs and 26 mins of working.
DECEMBER I spent $2,066.52 on rentals
JANUARY $1,175.74
FEBRUARY $86.78
MOST nights I only actually made $12-20 by time you figured out all the expenses.
Getaround has a fuel reading system that is NEVER accurate and yet they charge you instantly for any gas discrepancy and then YOU have to call, argue, prove that the gas was filled and then wait 7-10 days for the refund. NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION explained to me that Getaround could just cancel their charge and it would immediately be dropped BUT because GA CHOOSES to enter a charge and then issue a refund that's why it takes the 7-10 days. They explained companies like GA do this so they can report hirer earnings to their shareholders because they can show charges without having to reveal the refunds but if its a cancelled charge they can't pad their revenue numbers.
I have been made to stand on the side of the road 4/5 times where the rental NEVER showed up. After almost EVERY driving shift I would have to call and argue about the gas fees. I had a nail in a tire get picked up off the highway and when I reported the problem they told me first the Owner was going to be getting the car and could take me to my vehicle at the rentals original pick-up & drop-off location, 3 hrs later at 6 am in 40 degree weather they told me the Owner refused to pick the vehicle up and assured me they would charge the $245 fee to the Owner and they gave me $120 credit for the inconvenience. Now 1 month later they sent me a $245 invoice for the tow truck, they refused to send a copy of a towing invoice, they refused to let me have a mechanic look at the car and verify the tire damage was normal wear and tare, They did not supply a copy of an inspection report by an ASE Certified mechanic instead they let the Owners take the car to whatever mechanic they want then take the Owners word for it at the cost of the driver, they refused to review their recorded calls to verify I was told the Owner would be responsible for the tow fee, they sent me their invoice at 8 pm and blocked me from renting til I pay it so they took a night I planned on driving and destroyed it.
THE ONLY reason I continued renting was I wanted my earnings with Uber to remain high so I could qualify for a new loan on a 2015 or newer vehicle. Our family Ford Edge is a 2013, so although it is a great vehicle, I have been unable to use it for Uber and was forced into the rental hell.
EVERY time GA told me they would call about a problem, they NEVER DID.
GA DOES NOT have in-house service representatives, they hire a 3rd party call center so they can obfuscate and put so many steps between you and them. They do not have a management on site so they will always tell you they'll call in 24 hrs but they DO NOT.
I believe GA is using illegal advertising practices and have a call in with the Arizona Bar to find an attorney who will look to sue. They advertise rentals like a Chevy Equinox for starting at $3/hr or $49/day HOWEVER this fee structure is IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO. Out of 54 rentals I never had 1 for 24 hrs and yet every single rental was well over the $49. I used to manage a car dealership and I know we were held to advertising laws and if we said there was a car that a customer could get starting at say 0 down $299/mo for 48 mos YOU HAVE TO have a real vehicle with the sku # on the ad of that real vehicle that can be sold at that price. There is LITERALLY no way to get to any starting-at price they advertise.
So to recap:
You can be made to stand around for hrs and still not get your rental which at that point you lose an earning day and the money was already taken from your account and will be tied up for 7-10 days.
They instantly charge for missing gas even if they are way off and you prove it. They take that money instantly then take, again, 7-10 days to return it.
They only use 3rd Party customer representatives so you get hung up on ALL the time and they just stick to a script and DO NOT CARE about you.
You cannot get help from 10 pm to 4 am even though your rental may start between those hours, so if your rental isn't there, which happens too much, you're just outta luck and have to wait to get help. DO NOT CANCEL the rental because if you do they will argue you had the rental and will try not to refund you, MAKE THEM cancel the rental on their end and message the Owner of the vehicle in the app.
If you get a flat tire they will force you to pay $245 for towing, the highest rate even though GA does not tow vehicles. Even then they will leave you stranded and tell you "I understand how that is upsetting to you..." They literally will lock you out of the car, not offer an Uber or any way to get to your car, so I had to spend $32 on an Uber to get back to my vehicle. They will issue credits and say you are not liable then refuse to acknowledge those facts or listen to their recorded calls and try and charge you at 8 pm well after business hours so if you wanted to drive you have to pay their junk fee.
I truly believe their algorithm works in tandem with Ubers surges and rates because there is no set hourly fee. One time they charged me $20.54/hr to extend from 6 am - 7 am and because you've already paid so much you usually HAVE to drive 8 hrs+ in order to make any take home money and even then if it's not a great night you could end up losing money and working all the hrs.
YOU CANNOT pay your rent and survive on the UBER - Getaround Rental Program it is IMPOSSIBLE.
I uploaded images proving the expenses of rentals the flat tire and images proving the car was parked safe and not involved in an accident. I attached 2 following rental invoices after the flat tire showing they gave me $120 in credits and which should lend validity to my recollection of being told the Owner would also be charged the $245 tow fee and the credit was for being left in the cold 3 hrs.
I have never spent so much money, made so little back and been made to feel so angry throughout the entire experience. WORST COMPANY will be happy if they end up like Blockbuster.
54 different rentals for the purpose of driving Uber like the App requires renters to be.
Some 2 months ago I was talked into investing in Getaround by a friend. I told my friend link me up with someone to talk to and he did. I spoke to one of Getaround sales representative with the name Andy Bindas he convinced me into putting 5 cars! I purchased 5 cars worth over $160,000 but to my greatest surprise, I didn't receive my first payment as agreed on the 15th and now I have my 2 cars worth almost 70k stolen with Getaround not taking responsibility! These 2 cars got missing within a 2 days interval with the Getaround app deactivated and a friend of mine also lost his car on Getaround within same time and same way mine was taken away. I would have been loosing 3 cars now if not that a friend of mine who manages one of my cars noticed on time that my car wasn't at the home location when Getaround ended the trip and immediately called Getaround and eventually the car was recovered. What I have come to understand is that they have criminals amongst them that track recent cars and go after them. When my car was installed, I wasn't allowed to be there, I don't know where the device was connected, now tell me how someone was able to get into my car and have my device demobilized and my car taken away without Getaround not being able to track my car down till date. Their excuse was that my security enhancements were off which is never true as I never turned off anything! Andy Bindas who is their staff installed my cars and I noticed that without one getting in using the App, the car won't start, now I asked get around, how was someone able to get into my car and have it taken away and that question they have refused to answer!
PLEASE I WILL ADVISE THAT YOU DON'T SHARE YOUR CAR ON THIS PLATFORM! IT DOES NOT WORTH IT!
I have had the absolute worst experience using get around.
I rented a car with get around starting the 30th, we get to the car with my two sons who are 9 months and 3 years old, and the car already looks very dirty but I guess thats just a detail and not that important, I get in the car and turn it on and I start realizing the car had some kind of a problem, I start driving it get on the highway and almost risked my life because the car would not go fast than 50 miles per hour, it would break on its own and the motor would make a really bad noise. I was scared for my kids and my life driving this car. I parked the car in a safe spot and from there started the worst day of my life, it was impossible to get any of your agent on the phone as the automated system did not recognize my phone number even though it was linked to my reservation and for some reason did not recognize my reservation number as well, it took me 1 hour to get someone on the phone, after that an other hour to finally get transferred to road side assistance, my calls would drop and even though they knew the whole situation i would receive no calls back. I finally got someone from road side assistance on the phone that tells me "we are sending a tow truck and you will get a text message with all the information", I never received a text message but did receive the tow truck. The tow truck parked and asked me "what do I do with car", I certainly thought roadside assistance or get around would have send a tow truck with clear directions but apparently not. And there goes another hour on the phone trying to find someone that could help us, no one knew how to help us and kept on telling us that the tow truck driver would know when he absolutely did not, after a an hour negotiating, we finally have a solution: a taxi will pick you up where you are and take you to Europcar where you'll have a new car waiting for you. We waited about 2 hours for the taxi, we finally get someone on the phone again after calling about 5 more times and kept on hearing the taxi is on its way, only to found out they never had our location to begin with so never sent the taxi (keep in mind this is in the middle of summer in Madrid so extremely hot, with 2 kids, suitcases, car seats, no where to go or wait since we kept on hearing the taxi is arriving). The taxi arrived and we are on our way to europcar, which I got told maybe 6 times I had a reservation with. We arrived at Europcar I give my name and last name and the lady tells me there so no reservation under my name, I could not believe it, we call again, I explain the whole situation again to a new agent which he assures me yes it is europcar, he even gives me the reservation number, the lady at Europcar tells me its impossible that this is a Europcar number. I call once again, have to explain the whole story again, they put me on hold for another 10 minutes only to find out it was never Europcar but Enterprise, I had to walk another 1.5 km to the right place, again with my 2 young kids, suitcases, car seats, stroller etc and then finally at around 8pm got the replacement car. I wasted an entire day of vacation because of this.
Overall, the irresponsibility of the owner of the car for putting a car that is incredibly dangerously broken out of rent, the way get around agents were un helpful and actually pretty rude (please listen to the recording of the phone calls), and the roadside assistance that were not only incapable and plain stupid.
The fact that get around was completely fine with leaving a woman her 2 young kids, out in a city, with absolutely no follow up, no help, not once has someone contacted me to make sure roadside assistance was able to help, not once has anyone reached out to make sure I got the replacement car.
Their automated service also just doesn't work, I wasn't able to get through anyone with my phone number or my reservation number.
If you are looking to rent a car, or put your car up for rent, I promise you get around is not worth it.
We rent Getaround for errands and convenience so perhaps our experience greatly differs from those who rent Teslas or expensive models for the "driving experience". Everytime we rent from Getaround the car is either filthy, has broken parts or downright dangerous to drive considering the car's condition. When the cars have been filthy, the inside is not only covered in dust and mud, but also dog hair and or smelling of vomit. One car had a broken side rear view mirror hanging on by scotch tape.
The most recent time before we deleted the app, we rented a minivan that we had previously reported it had engine issues that needs to be fixed prior to being safe enough to drive. Seeing it on the App gave us the impression that it had been fixed so we rented it again, only to pick up the car with worse engin issues. Many of the warning lights were on while we drove, the car rattled and the steering wheel would constantly veer to one side and jerk back itself. The engine made the sound of a racecar. We had loaded the car with luggage to go away for a night and has 2 kids with us, and decided that it really isn't safe to drive anymore so we called Getaround. Customer service gave no solution except to tell us to drive back to where we picked up the car and choose/rent another car. Customer service said they had EMAILED us saying the car is not drivable. They also called us but did not leave a voicemail. We were appalled that not only do they expect us to continue to drive with a dangerous car back to the pick up spot, they allowed us to rent it on the app. Shouldn't there be a basic filter to bar offering dangerous cars on the platform? Are we supposed to check our emails every time we rent a car from them, at 7AM? Basically, it seems that anyone can offer their car to rent on the App, and there is absolutely no maintenance of the cars' quality or safety standards. We were left with no choice but to drive back, unload all the luggage and 2 kids and un-do the car seats at home, and cancelled our trip. There was no minivan nearby and we for sure did not want to continue to take the risk of using another Getaround car.
A whole weekend completely wasted by poor service and products of this company. Very upset.
car sharing
0 stars if I could! Typically, I do not write reviews, but I feel that I have been so grossly taken advantage of that it is necessary to forewarn. The owner reported 2 small spots on bottom bumper of the car 5 days after my rental. The arbiter resulted that I was at fault based on only on the next renter's photos absent of the fact there is at least an entire 8 hours - 5 days between myself and the another renter. I took 360 view picture of the car, which was originally very externally damaged. They are holding me liable for the time between myself and whenever the next person picked up the car and will not provide any information or even a bill beyond the 1 picture, but withdrew $757 from my account prior to even notifying me of doing so. I decided to look up other reviews (after the fact shame on me) and found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/ctqwu0/beware_of_getaround_attempted_to_charge_me_750/
Seems their 1.27 stars on BBB is very justified and they repeatedly take advantage of renters based on ill formed "investigations" by a third party.
I spent 4 years as a renter with Getaround and most recently 1 year an owner, renting out my own vehicle. I'm going to share why I strongly advise anyone against renting their vehicle through Getaround. I hope my experience brings to light the negligence and lack of risk management the company has for their customers.
It is in Getaround's policy and procedures to instruct drivers to leave ignition keys within the vehicle under the visor in a Velcro pouch provided with their logo. I opted to not have decals with the logo on my car. On the website my vehicle is listed with a small radius location and photos of the front including license plate identifier. Anyone with an account can easily find the vehicle parked on the street.
Late December 2019 my vehicle was stolen, found crashed into a pole. I was able to track the vehicle through their application with ~5 minute accuracy. It was reported stolen, by notifying both police and Getaround.
Because the vehicle was stolen outside of a rental period Getaround claimed they could not help. I did not have the right insurance plan, so my insurance carrier did not help either. I was left to repair the $3,000 body damage fixes out of my pocket. It took nearly 2 months for Getaround to release my vehicle from their system and finally tell me to get the vehicle ignition switch removed myself, though they installed it.
As an car owner, I could not trust the word of their employees. They never once reviewed a response when the representative said they would be back in contact by email or phone. In the end they were not on my side unwilling to admit fault that their policy for leaving the key in the vehicle is a liability. This liability is at the car owners expense. So, please beware what you are signing up for.

This could not have been handled worse.
I asked about relocating my car on Getaround in February. The initial agent assured me this was an 'easy task' and deactivated my listing.
After providing the updated address, I received zero acknowledgement and no response for 10 days. When I messaged to followup on the lack of response, Jessica replied stating the address and location were updated but it appeared the car wasn't at the home location.
I verified the car showed at the new address through the app and replied to confirm.
After receiving zero acknowledgment or response for ANOTHER TEN DAYS, I called and the agent said he'd message Jessica. She replied and reactivated the listing at the new address and offered to waive $20 Connect fees for one month.
I responded that $20 was inadequate given the 20 days delay in responding and handling what was explained as an 'easy task' wasn't sufficient.
After zero acknowledgment or response for another 11 DAYS this time, I called and replied to the message thread. The agent on the call said the ticket had been reassigned and that Jessica was no longer with the company and the new person hadn't addressed the ticket yet.
Evidently this was a lie as Jessica then replied to the thread with a message she would escalate this to the 'internal team' to see what compensation could be offered beyond waiving $20.
Yet ANOTHER WEEK later and I had to call in again because there was zero followup. A supposed "manager" replied and said waving the Connect fee was the best they could do.
Not only is the lack of acknowledgment and followup on service egregious, but Getaround's shocking lack of management prevented my car from being rentable for at least 20 days (conservatively that's about $300 given the car's earnings history.)
Customers shouldn't have to endure sketchy customer service, being blatantly lied to (Jessica still works there), or most egregious end up foregoing rental income due to the company's lack of workflow management and follow through on customer service.
Getaround should be avoided at all costs. This unfortunately wasn't the first similar issue over more than two year in terms of response times, lies, and costing me income. Quite honestly this company deserves to go out of business for the way it handles the owners of the cars that generate it's revenue.
In the end, I had stated my claim for $300 and called repeatedly only to be assured the manager Mitchell would be messaged and reach out to me directly.
No one could bother to make contact and handle the issues raised so I have terminated my rental with Getaround and shared the above with anyone who has business with the company.
The simplest followup would have consisted of a community manager calling to say "I'm sorry we f'd up. Here's what we can do to fix it." and offer some compensation more in alignment with my actual loss of income due to their inability to handle service.
First up, I rarely if ever write reviews complaining about a service. If I have an issue, I much prefer to speak directly to those in charge rather than shout into the ether and spread negative talk. However, after hours spent trying to work this out, being as patient and understanding as I can, I have no choice but to add my voice and help others avoid this fate.
Decided to take a gamble and rent a car through Getaround to use to travel upstate. Travelled almost an hour by PT and foot to a garage designated by the app to collect the car. Arrive at the garage to find the car is not there. There is no direct number to contact the owner. Immediately call the help line and wait 10 minutes on hold before I get to talk someone. In the meantime, I send two emails to the help service after the first one bounces with a "this service is not connected to a valid email" alert.
Spend 45 minutes on the phone with a staff member to remedy the situation. The car I had booked had not yet been returned by the previous renter which seems Basic Operation 101. Don't rent out a car before the car has been returned (for context I had rented the car 2 hours before pick up time)!
Alt car provided in Jersey (I live in Brooklyn). Rental period not even extended to cover the delay. Was either that or refunded & paid $10 credit (which is essentially Getaround saying: We want to fail at the most basic element of our service, waste hours of your time, get you to spend extra money on travel returning from another state after returning the car, and for that we will pay you $10).
I ask if they think that's fair, the staff member agrees that it is not however that is the best he can do.
Staff member and supervisor hemmed In by "company protocol". Any other new business would be bending over backwards to ensure good relations this early on. However end up paying $100s of my own time returning the car Monday, after compromised, much needed weekend away.
No discount to original rental, one way Uber covered up to $45 (which WAS NEVER PAID). Leaves me stranded in Jersey Monday morning, with a rental cut short by 30mins.
Grotesque disconnect from what company does to protect itself in the short term vs what it costs in the long term.
Hours out of my day wasted. Weekend plans derailed.
Then, in the week that followed, a mix of struggling calls with one staff member to resolve the failure and a complete mess of automated messages and calls/emails from random staff members following up on the botched ticket. Promised a payment for an Uber which WAS NEVER RECEIVED, despite my requests. Promised some sort of compensation for the failed rental WHICH WAS NEVER RECEIVED. All I got was 2 x vouchers (1 x $10,1 x $30) with an expiration date of 90 days.As mentioned, this fails to cover the Uber I was promised.
Follow up emails ignored.
Equates to falsification of service and theft. Criminal at worst, ineptitude of the highest order at best.
DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE, either as vendor or customer. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT. Any investor with 2 minutes to google Getaround will discover the truth. I will be amazed if this is still around in 12 months.
I've been renting cars with Getaround for about a year now. Two days ago (November 22) I get an email stating essentially this:
Hi, we're Getaround. We have determined that damage was done during your trip with the white Fiat you rented. We tried charging your card for the $610 but it didn't go through. Please provide us with new debit or credit card information. Attached is the invoice. Thanks for your cooperation.
I was completely blind sided. I rented that car two days prior to receving this email and I never got in an accident and left the car in perfect condition, so I called them right away to straighten things out. The Getaround employee who answered the phone told me this was regarding a trip that I took with the same white Fiat ALMOST THREE WEEKS AGO ON NOVEMBER 4TH. First red flag. Second red flag happened when when the Getaround employee told me, verbatum," There was no damage when you rented the car, and after you rented the car, there was damage, therefore you are liable." Hold on. I know for a fact that I didn't get in any accidents while driving that car and it was in perfect condition. The Getaround app doesn't require you to take pictures of the state of the car after you're done with it. Which is the third red flag. I am certain that either (A) someone did a hit and run with the parked car after I used it or (B) the owner of that car got into an accident after I used it and is trying to pin it on me.
Apparently, the entire back bumper of the car had to be replaced. Getaround never once tried to contact me about this, until two days ago, and they only contacted me to inform me that my card didn't go through when they tried to charge it and to provide them with new payment information. IF THAT ISN'T SHADY BUSINESS THEN I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS.
All I have to say is, I can't believe this is happening to me, and I would be happy to pay for any damage that I did. However, I left the car in perfect condition so how did Getaround determine that damage happened during my trip? I asked them this question and more via email, and still no response from them. RED FLAG AGAIN. Coincidentally, I left some keys in another recent Getaround rental I partook in and the Getaround employees are very quick to respond to those emails. Very shady. Protect yourself from these fools and take pictures of all the exteriors and interiors of the cars you rent through them, because this just might happen to you.
My car was stolen due to Getaround, just a few days after I started renting it through the company's service. I've lived in my house for four years and never had a single issue with safety regarding my car until now. My car was stolen on 10/28/2019 and they have done nothing to resolve this. Throughout this entire experience Getaround has conducted inappropriate behavior including: created personal safety issues for me, prohibited the police from conducting sufficient reports/forensics, an incredible lack of communication with absolutely no returned calls from the safety team, towing the vehicle to illegal and unsafe locations, promises that they would reimburse me by a certain date with no reimbursement, financial impacts due to my increased commute from not having a car, professional impacts from time out of work to handle this issue. I've never experienced such inappropriate customer service from a company.
What happened:
Lied About Reimbursement: Getaround informed me that they would reimburse me by 11/15/2019 if I sent a receipt and proof of payment by 11/14/2019. I sent all required information by 11/13/2019 and received no reimbursement. Additionally, I even gave them additional information by sending a cost breakdown the week prior (11/07/2019).
Inability to Investigate Crime Scene because of Getaround: My car was found on the opposite side of town with the key missing since Getaround keeps in the key in the car). Getaround towed my car before the police came to the scene, which meant that the police could not conduct forensics.
No Communication: I have called countless times to confirm that Getaround received the repairs estimate, to understand the process, to get confirmation that they had everything in place and received no information. I've called multiple times a day since my car was stolen on 10/28/2019. Specifically, David from Getaround has been the point of contact with no communication back.
Towed to Illegal and Incorrect Location: Getaround was supposed to inform me when they were towing my car. I did not hear anything from Getaround for 24 hours after my car was found to be stolen, instead I only heard from the tow truck driver who called me during the middle of a work day saying he towed my car to my house. The car was supposed to be towed to the dealership to be repaired. Instead they towed my car to an illegal parking spot at my house, where I then received parking tickets. My car sat in this location for over 24 hours, with the window broken. Additionally, I was told that I would be called when I car would be towed. Late on the night of 10/31/2019 I noticed my car was gone, when it had been there 10 minutes before. I had received no call so I immediately thought the car was stolen. I tracked my car moving and it ended up a few towns over. I called Getaround and they had no idea what was happening. So we called the police. We had the police in my house until 1:00am that night dealing with a police report. After many hours the police approached the house where my car was located. It turned out a tow truck driver had brought it to his house before taking it to the dealership. I was never informed of any of this.
Personal Safety Concerns: The person who stole my car has my car key and stole it from my house. Therefore, when Getaround towed the vehicle back to my house, it meant that the person is out there, with my car key, and knows where I live, and could come around any time to my home.
Irrational: Getaround towed my car to the dealership, but then email me later that another shop would be making repairs.
Negative Professional Impact: I've had to take countless hours of my day to call Getaround with no response back.
Negative Financial Impact: I've had to drastically change my commute given the days my car has been stolen and being fixed. The financial impact of this has been incredibly high.
Degrading Experience: I've been treated like I do not matter, they tell me one thing and then never do it. It's been an incredibly disrespectful service, where I've just been pushed off and disregarded.
