Like many people here, I was a devoted TaxAct customer. How nice to have them let me go through the ENTIRE process, only to then say, "oh, and surprise, since you're a small business, you'll now need to pay us $39.95 to process your Federal Return! Ha Ha! ". I then went to Turbo who also says the Federal is free -- exact same rotten trick and shame on these companies. I was then going to go through the agony of doing the paperwork myself and mailing in a check to the IRS. I did one last desperation search and saw Freetaxusa.com and then came here to read the reviews. The only folks who were displeased were the ones who had not received their REFUNDS as fast as they'd like to have them. As the company keeps trying to tell people -- it's the IRS who dictates when the money is released, not Freetaxusa. Anyway, long story short: I was expecting a bare bones sort of software system when I did my Federal with them -- but it's not, it's top notch and it walks you through the steps JUST LIKE the crooks at the top companies USED to do. I just filed my Federal this morning and it went like a breeze. They also show you the companies who will do the electronic payment with your cc -- and I did. It's done. I wanted to come back and do this review because of the great people who took the time to do THEIRS and they encouraged me to try it. A big thank you to the folks who reviewed the site here, and thank you Freetaxusa, because your calculation system saved me $130. I know where to go next year.
I keep sending them emails and they can't telephone you. They are jerks. They don't help you when there is an error. They keep making more errors. I think this company is lame.
Please do not use this Company to file your taxes. They really screwed me over with 2017 tax filing with the State of CA. I received a letter of proposed assessment from the Franchise State Tax board stating I owe them $2,000.00. Seems I was not allowed to file as Head of Household because my qualifying dependent made too much money. I have never heard of this income law before and have used this filing status as such every year. I count on the software system that I am paying for to know the laws and have a hard stop in place like they do on some of the other screens. Free TaxUSA of course is stating this was my fault when their software system did not pick up the error and let me know. Even the Tax Advocate and the auditor at the FTB said it was Free TaxUSA's error and I should be refunded. All they wanted to refund me was the $19.95. I am seeking legal action against them to get my money back. Do not use this site, you can file for free right on the FTB website I was told and that is what I will do from now on.
I’m really sorry for your frustration. We do our best to help customers file their returns correctly and provide many tax alerts to help. On the California Head of Household Questionnaire screen, there's a question that asks for your dependent's income. If you enter an amount that is above what California allows for the Head of Household filing status ($4,050 for 2017), our software will provide a warning that indicates that California might disallow your filing status. You are then given the opportunity to change your filing status, your dependent's income, or file your return as is. You are welcome to sign in to an account on our website to verify that we do provide this warning.
I filed taxes in February and I am still waiting on my Federal return, still in processing status. It has been a month, don't understand the issue, they accepted and now I am still waiting.
Hi Debbie, sorry to hear you’re still waiting on your Federal return. Once the IRS has accepted your tax return the rest of the process is in their control, including the timing. The IRS will have the most up-to-date information on the status of your tax return. After 21 days, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and one of their representatives will be able to research the status of your tax return.

We're very sorry to hear of your situation. One of our customer service representatives would be happy to take a look at your account to address your concerns regarding your return. Please sign into your account and select the "Support" tab at the top of the page. We look forward to helping you resolve this issue.
My return was accepted 02/10/2021, still no refund. Used HR Block for someone else, their return was accepted 02/15/2021, and they already received their refund.
Hello Deborah. We realize it can be frustrating. Generally, individuals receive their refund in 10-21 days. The IRS has indicated it can take longer if an additional review is needed. Thank you for your continued patience as the IRS works through the millions of returns and refunds submitted as they have begun processing in just the last two weeks.
I have used FreeTaxUSA for two years. While it generally calculates your return correctly, I had issues last year with them wanting to charge a fee when I qualified for a free return based on the information they supplied to the IRS on their free file webpage.
And this year, I am supposed to file Schedule B because I needed to submit a Fin Cen 114 form and FreeTaxUSA can not generate Schedule B unless I had taxable income over $1,500. Also, I noticed that for capital gain/loss transactions, they don't allow you to make adjustments to the information reported by brokers. And when they are faced with having an issue, they just say - sorry we can't support your return - a sad response after spending many hours inputting your tax return information (I had at least 50 capital gains/loss transactions).
Their customer service replies (while fairly fast) seem to skirt an issue. After they replied they just let my responses sit for days until I sent multiple other messages to find out what was going on. This process took over a week to get a definitive reply (that they could not properly submit Schedule B as required by IRS guidelines). To me, this also is not reasonable.
For 95+% of people that have typical returns, I think this website will do a great job. People who have more complex situations, I would think twice about using them to file your return.
Hi Seth, thanks for writing. As you said, we do support most taxpayers and their returns, but there are certain situations that our software cannot accommodate. We are always looking for ways to improve the software for our customers and appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. I'm sorry about the confusion over Schedule B and making adjustments to your capital gain income. I'm also sorry to hear that your issues weren't directly addressed by our customer support representatives and will contact you directly to find a resolution.
My stepdaughter used it last year she put her put her account number in and never got her refund. The number she put in does not match number she entered somehow it got changed. Never use it again
Hello Jenny! We are sorry to hear of the difficulties your daughter has experienced, we sincerely apologize for the frustration this has caused. It sounds like she may have chosen to pay our fee with her refund. This option allows a temporary bank account to be set up with Civista Bank, a division of TPG. The refund funds are first sent from IRS or state to the temporary TPG account, our fees are removed and then the remainder of the funds are sent to the account selected by the customer. If for some reason the refund isn't sent from the IRS or state, issues can arise. We would be happy to follow up on this and provide additional assistance. Can you have your daughter sign into her account and send a message to our support team? One of our agents would be happy to help resolve this issue.
They save your info from last year and let you use it this year without holding it hostage for money! I just filed my taxes for the second year in FreeTaxUsa. They saved all of my info from last year, pre-filled family info, employer info, mortgage bank info, etc. All I had to do is go in and make updates to income, mortgage interest, etc. Saved a ton of time in data entry.
They didn't just transfer my last year's info to show me how easy it would be to to have everything pre-filled, then hold the info hostage if I didn't agree to buy a higher priced product like some other tax preparation software companies. They just let me use my own information. Another thing they allowed me to do that SOME OTHER tax preparation software companies wont allow me to do is file a 1099-misc. For non-employee income for free instead of $50! I love this and have told everybody I know.
I also paid this company to file my state return instead of going straight to the state website like I normally did. It was a fair price, and I appreciate their business practices enough to pay them. Frankly, I wouldn't mind paying them a small fee for federal filing either.
I've been using them for 8 years and have never had a problem. They actually were more accurate then when I went to an H & R Block. The comments on here are so strange.
This is a great product if you have common sense and know how to read; if you feel like you need more of a walkthrough and hand holding, then go ahead and pay for all the rest, but you will be wasting your money. I've done TurboTax and HR block, and both returns take the same time for more money than this website.
The main complaints are about customer support and taxreturn. I honestly have not seen any difference of when I get my return from the government, and the wait has not been unreasonable. I don't really count on my return as a necessity so it's just a nice bonus to get at the beginning of the year.
Customer support is overrated; if you take a little time to read through the website, you will be able to answer your own questions just as anyone from TurboTax would do over the phone and you will feel happier you know how this stuff works.
It really is a great time saver, convenient, and accurate. The interface could do a little work (all done through jQuery), but it is what you get. Really makes you wonder about all those suckers who pay $40 for a return they can finish in 30 minutes themselves.
If your return is very very complicated, by all means get an accountant, otherwise, just go to FreeTaxUSA. They rock!
No state tax in Florida so FREE since 2016. Their services are underpriced. Today, however, the preferred lender (incentives for me) of the developer building our next house demanded W2, s for 2018 & 2017. 2018 resolved. 2017 seems hopeless. Tried various solutions from their site & Google. This includes looking for headings I'm supposed to find on their site that aren't there. Others found that do not provide promised results. Found 2017 tax returns, provided me 2018 W2, s. Attempts of contacting their "customer service" just walked me back to their site to figure it out on my frustrated own. Really arrogant of them. A "it's not me it's you" additude on their part. I've wasted time on this today that I didn't have to spare. So beware, if you ever need them they will not be there for you!
I now know that but right now I fully accept that I'll almost certainly use them this next tax year w/ great hope I won't be in an uncharted situation again. I do hate WalMart but I'm still in there on occasion? I do hope they appreciate the zing I intend by aligning them w/WM. But as FTUSA is free then it's true that I'm paying less for the customer service t I don't get from them than that that I don't get at WM. So I'll be back next year.
Hi CL, thanks for reaching out. I would be happy to follow up on this issue to make sure you receive the support you need. Can you private message your email address through SiteJabber?
Not everyone uses a 1095A! Some people use 1095B. Or 1095C. Because of their incompetent tax tool theres NO OPTION! I have repeatedly tried to file using their scrappy software only to be rejected by the IRS over 4X's! I went to H&R block who also is free to file and they gave 1095 options unlike this scrappy service offered by freetaxusa! Last year IRS corrected returns without people having to file an amendment. No worries but not mine because I used freetaxusa who refused to put my DD info on my return because FTUSA decided I didnt need it on my tax return! Highly NOT recommend!
Hi Stella, we're sorry to hear of your frustration. The IRS often changes their requirements for reporting certain information on a tax return each year, and our software is updated each year to stay up to date with those IRS requirements. Please contact a customer support agent if you wish to discuss this further. You can use the "Contact Support" link within your account to get connected.
And have recommended to friends and have used it to help others. NEVER a problem. SO eazzzzy! Even complicated returns are done perfectly - it is so easy that paying for the state is a bargain...
Thank you for the review! We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Over the years, I have used TaxAct until last year, 2015 filing, TaxAct charged me for filing federal tax return using its s/w. I don't mind paying but TaxAct did not forthright telling users that they have to pay until the end when they are ready to file, then they got hooked. This year TaxAct said upfront in fine print that only 1040EZ and 1040A are free.
I just finished filing my 2015 Fed. Tax Return with FreeTaxUSA and I noticed that the time for me to get it done about less than half of using TaxAct. At the end, when I am ready to file and to my surprise it's actually free not trying to hook me at the end. I file the 1040 with itemized deductions, Schedule D (capitial gains/losses), charities, Student Credit (8863).
It does require a little bit of tax knowledge to know what is the correct form to edit. But overall, it's very easy and a great tax s/w. I am the first time user and will use the FreeTaxUSA s/w again for my next year tax return. Highly recommended!
Update - 02/19/2016, I received my Fed's refund back, e-filed on the 02/10/2016... without any hiccups.
I had been using FreetaxUSA for a while now and I never paid for fees using my refund until this year. Well they said they just deduct their fees, never said they would have my whole refund go to them. Why in the heck do you need my whole refund going to you if the fee is only $54? There is no live support, only email. This will be the last time that I ever use their service. However, I work for the IRS, so if they decide to take my return like they have taken most people, it's going to get realer than real. To have both federal and state refunds come to you is BOGUS and if anything is off it will be a lawsuit. I PROMISE.
#classaction
Update: I have received my state income tax, but they are holding on to my federal return like it's theirs. Like wth are you holding on to taxpayers money for. I'm thinking they release the short money and hold on to the big money. Wow! I'm gonna need you all to release my money asap, it's not yours. You guys have done this to more than enough taxpayers, that its well enough for a class action. I'm not understanding why you are holding on to my federal return. I'm giving it until the beginning of next week to get into my account and that's it. You guys received it this week, and you had enough time already to put it in my account. Are you guys planning on stealing it?
Hello Letitia. I am sorry to hear that your experience with the "pay with refund" option was not what you were expecting. We do appreciate you using our software for many years. When you choose the option to pay with your refund, a temporary bank account is set up for you with our banking partner. Your entire refund is sent there, the fees are withheld, and your remaining refund is sent immediately to your bank account. We try to make this process clear when you sign up for it. If your refund was less than expected, it is likely the IRS made an adjustment. Please sign in to your account and select "Support" in the upper right-hand corner to send us a message regarding your concern. Our friendly and knowledgeable support staff is always happy to assist you via email free of charge. Your message will go to a live person, who will respond within a few hours. We also offer a live chat support option if you would like to upgrade to the Priority Support version of the software.
I wrote a review and it didn't post. Too many young or uninformed people have written negative reviews. Chief complaint was refund was coming SLOWER or FASTER than another site. This site or another has no bearing on speed of return. Once YOU send it is in the hands of the IRS. Not FreeTax. Take it up with the IRS. Now, my experience the past 2 days with FreeTax has been phenomenal. I put my tax preparation off for 2+ years and the attorney, bank, husband and others wanted them 3 weeks ago and failed to tell me til 2 days ago. I had hangups on both 2014 and 2015 returns. I could not get it to work for me for the life of me. I couldn't get a schedule attached to another and try as I might, (and I did try to trick the software)I could not fix it. So I contacted FreeTax for support, and because I was impatient I asked the same question twice within minutes. Then I had another one. These fine people went above and beyond for me. They gave clear, concise, informative instructions two times for each of the 2 questions I asked. In my hurry to make up for being late for 2014, and 15 I expected answers "snap" right now and dang, I got in a "snap". I will ALWAYS use them and I will urge others to do the same. I've used them for years and not one complaint. Thanks FreeTaxUSA.
In 2019, after filing 2018 tax return, FreetaxUSA double charged my credit card. 2 charges for $15.89 for one return in Pa. I disputed the charge... rightfully so. One charge for $15.89 was retuned. Problem resolved or so I believed. Fast forward to filing the 2019 return in the year 2020. After completing the tax return. My credit card and a few other cards of mine were denied. The reason stated was that there was a past issue of payment. I contacted customer support and they stated that their was a "chargeback" which cost them $15.89 plus a $35.00 fee to the credit card company. Therefore they refused to file my return. This was their mistake... not mine. Yet, they retaliated by refusing to file my return. However, they said they would file my return if I agreed to pay them $15.89 PLUS the $35.00 fee the credit card charged them. I was expected to pay them around $50.00 for their mistake. The kicker is they did not let me know this until I attempted to file my return. Subsequently, I missed the filing deadline and will be charged late filing penalties and interest... for THEIR mistake. Don't think so. Adios FreetaxUSA. I will not be responsible for YOUR mistakes. There are MANY MANY better options in my opinion.
Hi Ann, I'm very sorry for the frustration and would like to make this right. Can you private message your email address on sitejabber?
Said that I could private message him and provide him my email address - no link provided! Would like to ask questions regarding 2016 tax return.
Hi Patricia, I'm really sorry for the frustration. I would be happy to follow up on this issue with you. Would you please private message your email address?
Answer: Hi Janet, sorry for any confusion. The $12.95 fee is for state tax return preparation whether the tax return is e-filed or printed and mailed. In regard to your difficulty paying. When you make a debit or credit card purchase online, the card processor checks with your bank or credit card issuer to first make sure you have enough available credit to complete the purchase. The card processor then makes sure the other information you input (for instance, your address) matches what your bank has on record. If all is well, the transaction is processed. If not, such as an address that doesnt match, then the transaction is declined. If you were having difficulty with each card, I would recommend double checking the billing information you entered on FreeTaxUSA. If thats all correct, I would contact your bank and make sure the information they have on file is up-to-date. If youre ever having trouble while using our site, you can click on the Contact Support link or email our customer support team at support@freetaxusa.com and a support team member will be happy to assist you.
Answer: Hi Theresa! If you have not submitted your taxes and need to make changes, you can use the tabs near the top of the screen (Personal, Income, Deductions/Credits, etc.) to navigate to the area you want to make changes. If you've already filed, you'll need to amend your taxes in order to make changes. Our support agents would be happy to give more information for either case. You can contact them by selecting "Support" in your account.
Answer: Hi Mahlon, we are happy to help you with your questions. I'm sorry but we do not have phone support at this time. If you need some help you can contact us at support@support.freetaxusa.com
Answer: Hi Byron, thank you for reaching out. We are sorry to hear of the frustrations you are experiencing. Once the state return has been paid for and the return is finalized the returns are available for you to print. Would you please sign into your account and select to contact Support. This will allow us to assist you best.
Answer: Hi Peter. Thank you for your question. FreeTaxUSA is unable to mail your return for you. However, if you choose to mail your return on the Filing Method screen found under the Filing menu, our software will tell you how/where to mail your return. You can print a copy of your federal tax return for free on the Check Status/Print Tax Return screen also found under the Filing menu. If you don't have a printer and would like to order a printed copy, you can do that on the Order Products and Services screen found in the same menu.
Answer: Hi, Sean! That's a great question. Our software is entirely browser-based, so it will be compatible with any operating system running a major browser. This includes Chrome, Edge, Safari, iOS, and Firefox.
Answer: Hello Linda. I am sorry you have not yet received your tax refund. The IRS typically issues the refund in about 21 days. However, this is just an average and not a rule. Please check the status of your Federal refund at www.irs.gov/refunds. Your state will also have a similar site where you can check the status of your refund. If you have any questions after you have checked the status of your refunds, please sign into your FreeTaxUSA account and click on the Contact Support menu option.
Answer: Hello Shannon! Yes, you can prepare both your 2021 and 2022 taxes using our software, but you will enter each year's information separately in each year's software. Current year taxes can be e-filed, and prior year taxes will need to be mailed. There is no charge for e-filing, but we do have additional products available (such as State Tax Returns) for an additional cost. Our support agents would be happy to answer any additional questions at support@freetaxusa.com.
FreeTaxUSA has a rating of 2.2 stars from 288 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with FreeTaxUSA most frequently mention state taxes, last year and customer service. FreeTaxUSA ranks 1st among Tax Preparation sites.
