Everything this company promises in the Columbus, OH area is a lie. And by doing a little research on them to see if others have had poor experiences, I see a common theme of deceptive pricing practices. It's important to note that their truck sizes are very small. Only 10 feet long x 5 feet wide x 5 feet tall. So when they quote the whole "1/8 truck, 1/2 truck" thing, they are talking about a very small space.
- they will quote you a price over the phone and try to increase it significantly when they arrive by claiming
- they show up with trucks that are already full of other people's junk, tell you those trucks are "only 1/2 full" when it's obviously nearly full and then try to charge you for 1 and 1/2 trucks when your junk doesn't fit in a whole truck.
- they toss everything in, which means not only does everything get broken, it fills up the truck very quickly so you're paying for a bunch of empty space. Imagine if warehouses or airplanes were packed that way!
- they claim they "sweep up" after moving the items out but they don't. In fact, they'll dent your drywall, doors, scratch your floors and driveway but will get very angry if you point it out
- they DO NOT RECYCLE OR DONATE the items you have which is the sole reason I even chose this company. Instead, they'll deliberately destroy the furniture, dishes, toys, framed prints, etc by throwing them into the truck.
We are moving and had 22 years of items to get rid of. We threw out everything that was unusable, broken, old papers, etc. before contacting 1-800-got-junk. We chose them over other similar services because they claim to sort through the items and donate/recycle anything that's usable.
So we packaged up everything carefully, labeling items that were glass, framed art prints, toys in excellent condition with all the parts, books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, dishes, pots & pans, garden tools and furniture in good condition. Normally we would have donated these items to local charities but due to the short amount of time we have to get our home on the market, we called this company.
They told us that they charge by the amount of truck space your items take up and they quoted the highest amount would be $638 for a full truck. We agreed to a full truck and that price, stating anything that didn't fit, we'd take care of ourselves. They also said they'd sweep up after they were done and would recycle/donate any useful items.
When they arrived on Thursday, October 13th they had TWO trucks! One was 3/4 full and the other had a refrigerator in it. They told us we'd be paying for 1 and 1/2 trucks because "we don't get to tell them how many trucks they use". I told them I don't care how many trucks they use, but I am only paying for ONE empty truck, as agreed. The audacity of showing up with other people's junk, that they've already been paid for by those other people & trying to charge us for that AND our own stuff is a huge red flag.
The main guy began sulking and literally destroyed the furniture we had by tossing it as hard as possible into the truck. They don't pack the trucks neatly to provide more space, they toss everything in & charge you more (or try to). We had 1/2 a garage full (one layer) of usable items, a pickup truck amount of yard junk and 15 trash bags full of clothing, linens, toys, household items, working Xbox, Playstation, games, DVDs, CDs, kitchenware, small appliances and a few boxes with framed art prints.
All destroyed. They threw everything into the truck, glass breaking & it's clear it was all headed to the dump. Sulky guy (I will update with his name later) was on the phone with his boss after I called to complain about the pricing scam and he was told we'd only be paying what was agreed.
When they were finished, they left. No sweeping up, no checking if we were satisfied and, sadly for the other guy who just did what he was told, no tip.
Kyle was supposed to call us about our complaint, but he did not return our call. The local "corporate" manager - Rob Mitchell - laughed when we called to complain about the deceptive pricing, the broken items and lack of service, basically saying he couldn't care less.
Thankfully I paid with Amex so I'll be disputing this breach of contract.
In a day when we're told to care about the climate & environment, companies who do this should be fined heartily for taking perfectly good items that could be donated & sold to help others and filling our landfills with it.

Find someone local who has the ability to simply quote you a rate, and will load the truck neatly to provide more space for your items rather than tossing them in and charging more.
Junk hauling
About a month and a half ago I had them come get a refrigerator from my kitchen, left a hammer and screw driver with the item to remove my door Incase it did not fit out. My brother was home to show them everything but is in a wheelchair and could not help. A man named Herman called me in the way I explained that I had left it in case he needed to remove my door. After the job is over they call me from outside to take my payment over the phone, I specifically ask at that time if they had to remove my door. Herman then tells me he did not have to remove my door and then everything went well; I pay the $123 and change with my card over the phone and expect that to be the end. When I get home I find that they did not only dent my door but gouged my $400 and change (more with installation) door in multiple areas. I called right then and there and I'm told I'll hear back within 24 hours. Three days go by and I callback, i'm told they're sorry they will send a message to Herman who is apparently the manager and have him contact me. Another week and a half goes by I have heard nothing but I received an email from a woman who tells me the case is going to be closed because no one has heard from me. I reply to the email that no one has contacted me as my phone does not have a spam blocker and I answer every call due to my business. And then call the woman explain everything to her surprise Herman said he contacted me multiple times and I did not respond to him. Surprisingly he contacted me in the morning, but then proceeded to tell me that I was wrong told me that the screwdriver and hammer I left was not enough to remove a door, got mad during the phone call when I told him that I have pictures and I want it replaced or I want the money to pay for the door and installation, proceeded to try to say that my brother who is in a wheelchair told him he could not remove the door, and then hung up on me. I called back to one 800 got junk flipping out on the way he handled things and then I received a text message from him asking me for the door price and what it would take to fix it. I send all the information back picture of the door with the price tell him it needs to be installed as well he says OK somebody will come measure the door and get back to me. No one came, so I text him again asking him when they're supposed to show up he tells me they already came and no one was home, mind you my brother who's in a wheelchair never leaves because we don't have a wheelchair ramp he is always home! I explain that is not even possible as somebody is always at my house and I have two very large trained watchdogs who will alert the home to anybody there especially that close to the door. I then get a phone call later that night that somebody is on their way to come take a look at my door. I told them I would like them to leave the measurements they find with my brother and to let me know what's going on the gentleman says OK leaves I have the measurements here when I get home and I am expecting a call to let me know when it would be done. Nothing came for about a month, so I texted Herman and asked him for an update. He ignored the text. I called the main number at the beginning of this week and was told that the franchise did not answer but somebody will answer me by Wednesday at the latest. It is now Friday, trying to sell my home and explain that I have a banged up ding the door because of idiots is not the easiest. I have to contact the comptroller as well as an attorney to be able to get this fixed fast enough that I can sell this house, and not be charged way more than needed for the door replacement! If I can give them zero stars or negative I totally would, not just for the original experience, but for every proceeding experience after that. This place is absolutely the worst company I've ever done business with!

I asked for refrigerator to be removed from my kitchen.
I recently used their services. Will steer clear of them in future! Their pricing is highly subjective in nature and not very transparent. I live in Central NJ and perhaps their rates vary from franchisee to franchisee and from area to area, across the state and across the country! That is not really made clear.
You are very dependent on the pickup truck crew's eyeballing your load and telling you what fraction of a truck load that it represents, "in their opinion." That is the wrinkle. Also, they could, as a company, publish their rates by fraction of a truck load by local zip code or by region and email or message the rates to you ahead of time, if they wished to do so but apparently they do not so wish. They do not do so, as far as I could see, from my online searches. I will let readers speculate why they choose not to do this! I have arrived at my own conclusions!
Their online video commercial featuring their CEO, allegedly designed to explain pricing, really does so only in the very vaguest manner. So let me tell you what their rate card showed for my Central New Jersey zip code in this month of March 2021. Minimum charge cited was $185. Maybe that was for a single item. Their rate card did not specify what constituted a minimum load. For the lowest fraction of a load quoted on their rate card - i. E. a load of 1/8 of a truck they charged $225. They told me that I had 1/6 of a truckload which would cost me $285. A 1/2 load was $505 and a full load was $735. So it is a sliding scale and the rates go up less steeply the larger the fraction of a truck load that you require removed.
Now, to be fair, you can always refuse their services if you do not like their quote. However the lack of upfront transparency and the subjective nature of their eyeballed estimates really bothers/bothered me! Also please do not be dumb like me, I had filing cabinets and so to reduce weight for the crew I took out the drawers. Big mistake I told the crew that putting back the drawers on the truck would reduce the volume of my load. Do not try to be nice like me! My protest on this topic to the crew fell on deaf ears. So my advice to others is that it is best to leave drawers in. Do not be too concerned about the crew as they are not too concerned about you or your pocket!
Basically,. If I had not been expecting delivery of newer replacement furniture, the next day, I would have refused their services. However, for that reason, I did not really feel I had the option to do so, on this occasion.
Bottom line, personally, I am done with their services or at least until such time that I hear they are doing more to be more price transparent and reduce the estimating subjectivity!
